How to make a printable crossword puzzle
- Enter one word per line followed by its clue, separated by a colon — for example
rain : Water that falls from clouds. Lines without a clue simply use the word itself as a fill-in item. - Click Generate crossword. The words are automatically interlocked into a compact grid with numbered Across and Down clues.
- Click Print / Save PDF. The puzzle prints with a name and date line; if the answer key is ticked, a filled-in grid prints as a second page.
Crosswords with an answer key
Tick Answer key and the printout adds a second page with every letter filled in. On screen, the same toggle reveals the letters so you can check the layout before printing. This is the fastest way for teachers to grade a vocabulary crossword — print once for the class, keep the key page for yourself.
Crosswords with a word bank
The word bank option prints all the answers in a dashed box between the grid and the clues. Students still have to match each word to the right clue and fit it in the grid, but they aren't stuck guessing spelling — ideal for younger students, spelling practice and foreign-language vocabulary.
Why won't all my words fit?
Words can only join the puzzle where they share a letter with a word already placed. If a word has no letters in common with the rest of your list, the generator tells you which ones it couldn't connect — swap them for related words with common letters, or simply generate again for a different arrangement.
Is my word list uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything happens locally in your browser with JavaScript. Your words and clues never leave your device, and the page works offline once loaded.
